What is a Mango Lassi?
A Mango Lassi is a thick, creamy, frothy, yogurt-based drink blended with mango fruit, cardamom spice, and sweetener. It is most commonly served alongside a spicy meal or enjoyed as a mid-day snack. This simplistic beverage is surprisingly simple, easy, delicious, and effortlessly takes a meal to the next level! Are you ready to try something new?

A Family Favorite
The whole family gets so excited when they see that I’m bringing out the blender and a massive can of mango pulp because they know that a mango lassi is HAPPENING! You can feel the anticipation building in the room. This fruit-packed beverage is a big deal in my household, and everyone loves it!
Since I typically make this drink when it’s hot outside, I shortcut it by using ice instead of water to make it cooler in every sense of the word. You can also chill the glass you like for a little extra effect. Although it’s not traditional to do so, I feel that it makes the drink a bit thicker and creamier as well. That’s always a plus in my book.
This is my favorite way to balance a spicy meal such as a hot curry or shawarma. Nothing goes better with chicken shawarma and a side of naan like a frosty glass full of incredible cardamom-spiced mango lassi. It is a true game-changer!
The History of the Mango Lassi
Did you know that the lassi was the world’s first smoothie? It most likely originated around 1000 BC in Punjab, India. The lassi began with humble roots; yogurt, water, fruit, pure spices, and sweeteners. Today there are many variations of the lassi, but mango is my absolute favorite.
Mango Lassi Health Benefits
Mango is full of magnesium, potassium, and calcium. It’s great for your immune system as well as inflammation. The yogurt benefits gut health with its probiotics and can help support bone health as well. I have also heard that cardamon can aid digestion. This lassi is packed full of these ingredients, and it tastes incredible as well! Of course, you must consult your doctor if you’re using anything for health purposes. I am not a doctor, I just make good food.
Finding Ingredients
Mango Pulp – You may be able to find mango pulp at your local grocery store or online. I love the 24 Mantra Organic Kesar Mango Pulp brand. It’s sweet enough that I don’t need to add extra sugar and it comes in just the right-sized can to make a blender full of mango lassi.
Diet-Friendly Alternatives (Yogurt) – You can use any kind of yogurt that you like. I prefer to use a dairy-free alternative such as coconut milk yogurt or almond milk yogurt due to allergies in my household. You could absolutely try this with low-fat yogurt or Greek yogurt if that’s what you have on hand. It should taste just as good!
Cardamom – I was nervous about initially buying cardamom because I didn’t know what else I could use it for. I found out that cardamom can last up to about 3-4 years in an airtight container in your pantry and there are MANY uses.
- Cardamom and fruit are a match made in heaven!
- Try a pinch of it in your banana blueberry muffin recipe or an apple cinnamon pie.
- Cardamom is also one of the first components of chai spice!
Now you can absolutely make this recipe without cardamom altogether, but I prefer it in my mango lassi. The brand I currently use is McCormick Cardamom. However, there may be more bright or fragrant options on the market that I’m unaware of. This one works just fine for my kitchen but be sure to select the brand that goes best with yours.
