Sweet Breakfast Pastries with Cream Cheese Frosting
Flakey, rich, sugary, slightly tart, and lots of fun! These nostalgic little Sweet Breakfast Pastries with Cream Cheese Frosting are the BEST way to start off a delicious morning. The kids and I enjoyed selecting our fillings and decorating them to our liking. One of my favorite things about this recipe was the effortlessly customizable options. I also loved that these were simple and only used a few ingredients to make sprinkle-topped memories, one sweet and delicious breakfast at a time!

Topping Suggestions
- Sprinkles were a fun twist to top our pastries. You could also try chocolate chips, jam, or even fresh fruit.
- Cream cheese frosting holds things into place, but you could also try chocolate ganache, melted white chocolate, or cookie/cake frosting if preferred.
Making it Vegan
Make these pastries vegan using aquafaba instead of egg wash. Most freezer-section puff pastry is vegan (they use vegetable fats instead of butter.) However, please double-check the product if the goal is to make this recipe vegan to fit your dietary needs.
Be sure to use a vegan cream cheese substitute for the topping. I like to add a bit of lemon juice to mine, giving it that tangy cream cheese bite we all know and love.
Tips and Fun Ideas
When cutting the pastries, I used square lines to optimize the yield per sheet. However, you can customize your breakfast treats by cutting fun shapes if you prefer (but leave plenty of room in the center for your filling.)
There are multiple great options for filling your pastries before baking. A few ideas are using jam, fruit preserves, chocolate ganache, cinnamon/brown sugar mixture, lemon curd, or mixing your favorite flavors to customize the pastries.
Tip: Poking small holes in the top before baking will not only allow air to escape, it will lessen the chance of the pastry filling oozing out of the sides and help ensure that the inside of the breakfast pastry cooks through.
Topping with frosting is optional – For more delicious ideas, you can drizzle melted dark chocolate, white chocolate, melted peanut butter, or even finish your treat with a dusting of powdered sugar. The possibilities to create a fun and memorable breakfast here are nearly endless!

Sweet Breakfast Pastries with Cream Cheese Frosting
Ingredients
- 17.3 oz Package Frozen Puff Pastry (Defrosted)
- Flour for your work surface
- 1 tbsp Water
- 1 Egg
- ¼ cup Jam
Frosting
- ¼ cup Cream Cheese (room temperature)
- 3 tsp Lemon Juice
- 2 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla Paste
- 3 tbsp Heavy Cream (room temperature)
Extras
- Sprinkles (if desired)
Instructions
- Use the Flour for your work surface to keep your pastry from sticking to the counter, then roll out the 17.3 oz Package Frozen Puff Pastry to 16in. by 12in. Layer the pastry sheets to cut, this will help you keep the pastry size consistent. Cut into 14 squares even, then divide the top and bottom layers. You should have 32 squares in total, making 16 complete pastries.
- Using the egg wash, brush all four sides of the pastry. This will be the glue to hold the top layer onto the bottom, and to help keep the filling from spilling out.
- Using the ¼ cup Jam, fill each square in the very center with about 2 tsp. of filling per square
- Close the squares with a matching top layer of pastry and press or pinch around the sides to help keep them sealed. Poke two holes into the top/center of each pastry with a fork to create air holes to let the steam escape while baking. Then lightly brush each pastry with the remaining egg wash and pop them in the oven at 400℉ degrees for 12 minutes or until fully cooked through and golden brown.
- In a medium bowl, combine ¼ cup Cream Cheese, 3 tsp Lemon Juice, 2 cups Powdered Sugar, 1 tsp Vanilla Paste and mix until the lumps have gone. Add 3 tbsp Heavy Cream if needed to thin the icing to desired consistency. You want this thick enough to hold its shape once applied to the pastry and not too runny. I go for an almost ‘toothpaste’ consistency. Once your icing is mixed, pour into a zip-top bag and set aside.
- Remove the pastries from the oven and let cool. Apply the frosting and/or add Sprinkles if desired. Enjoy!
